Gallwey devised an exercise called ‘Back, Hit.’ Most golfers have tried it at some point. You say ‘Back’ when the club changes direction at the top of the backswing, and ‘Hit’ when the club strikes the ball. This exercise encourages awareness of where the clubhead actually is during the swing, rather than thinking about where it ‘should’ be.

Gallwey says:

‘I realised, as I had with tennis, that there is a very big difference between observing your swing, and trying to control it. Most important, I found out that it’s hard to do both at the same time. When I kept to the discipline of the exercise, paying full attention, I had much less tendency to over control my swing, and as a result, it seemed over time to gain control naturally.’
